Electrical Components & Controls
Amps
The electrical current drawn by a vacuum motor. U.S. appliances are limited to 12 amps on a 110-volt circuit.
Dirt Sensor
A sensor that detects debris passing through the vacuum, indicating when an area is clean.
Ionizing
The process of adding or removing electrons from atoms to create ions, often used in air purification.
Relay Assembly / PC Board
An electronic control board that regulates power to the motor and other components.
Reset Switch / Thermal Protector
A safety device that shuts off the motor if it overheats and resets once cooled.
Voltage (Volts)
The electrical potential that drives current through a device.
Watts
A measurement of electrical power. Calculated as Amps × Volts.
Filtration, Bags & Air Quality
3M Filtrete Filter
A high-performance filtration media developed by 3M that captures particles as small as 0.3 microns while maintaining strong airflow.
Activated Carbon
A porous carbon material used in filters to absorb odors, gases, and chemical vapors.
Allergen
A microscopic substance—such as dust mites or pollen—that can trigger respiratory or skin reactions.
Electrostatic Filter / Bag
A filter or bag made of synthetic fibers that develop a static charge to trap fine dust and allergens.
Factory Serviced
A product returned to the manufacturer for inspection, repair, testing, and repackaging.
Filtration Efficiency
The percentage of particles a filter captures as air passes through it. Higher efficiency means cleaner exhaust air.
HEPA Filter
High-Efficiency Particulate Air filter. Captures 99.97% of particles down to 0.3 microns.
HEPA-Type Filter / Bag
A filter or bag that uses HEPA-like materials but may not meet true HEPA standards.
Micron
One-millionth of a meter. Used to measure particle size in filtration systems.
ULPA Filter
Ultra-Low Particulate Air filter. Captures particles as small as 0.1 microns—more efficient than HEPA.
General Vacuum Terms
Anion
A negatively charged ion, often referenced in air purification technologies.
Canister Vacuum
A vacuum style where the motor and filtration system are housed in a separate wheeled unit connected to a hose.
Cyclonic / Bagless System
A dirt-separation method that spins air in a cyclone to drop debris into a dust chamber.
Vacuum (Partial Vacuum)
A region of reduced air pressure created by the vacuum motor.
Hoses, Inlets & Attachments
Automatic Cord Winder
A feature that retracts the power cord with the push of a button.
Bare Floor Nozzle
A hard-surface cleaning tool designed to maximize airflow for picking up fine dust and debris on smooth flooring.
Bare Floor Selector
A switch on upright vacuums that stops the brushroll from spinning to protect hard floors.
Direct-Connect Hose
An electric hose that plugs directly into a powered wall inlet, eliminating the need for a pigtail cord.
Electric Hose
A vacuum hose containing internal wiring to power an electric powerhead.
Low-Voltage Hose
A hose that carries a low-voltage signal to turn the vacuum system on or off but does not power electric attachments.
Pigtail Hose
An electric hose with a short power cord at the wall end that plugs into a nearby electrical outlet.
Turbine Nozzle
A carpet tool powered by airflow rather than electricity.
Turbo Tool
A handheld, air-driven brushroll tool ideal for stairs and upholstery.
Motor Types & Motor Components
Air Watts
A standardized measurement of suction power calculated using airflow and water lift. Higher air watts generally indicate stronger cleaning performance.
Bypass Motor
A motor design where incoming debris bypasses the motor and fan, improving durability and allowing the motor to run cooler. Common in central vacuums and commercial machines.
Fan (Impeller)
The rotating component inside a vacuum motor that creates suction by moving air through the system.
Flow-Thru Motor
A motor cooled by the air passing through the vacuum. Efficient and lightweight, but not ideal for heavy debris or moisture.
Horsepower
A measurement used for gas engines, not electric vacuum motors. Often used in marketing but not a true indicator of vacuum performance.
Motor Brushes (Carbon Brushes)
Carbon rods that deliver electrical current to the motor’s armature. They wear down over time and require replacement.
Peripheral Discharge Motor
A bypass-style motor that exhausts air around the perimeter of the motor housing. Common in many household and commercial vacuums.
Tangential Discharge Motor
A bypass-style motor that expels cooling air through a side exhaust port. Often used in central vacuums for improved cooling and longevity.
Performance Measurements
Airflow (CFM)
The volume of air a vacuum moves, measured in Cubic Feet per Minute. Higher airflow improves debris pickup.
CFM (Cubic Feet per Minute)
A measurement of airflow through a vacuum system. Higher CFM improves pickup performance.
Sealed Suction (Water Lift)
A measurement of suction strength when airflow is blocked, expressed in inches of water lift.
Water Lift Rating
Another term for sealed suction; indicates how strongly a vacuum can pull air when sealed.
Vacuum Construction & Materials
ABS Construction
Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene. A durable, lightweight, high-impact plastic commonly used in vacuum bodies and components.
Anti-Microbial
A material or treatment that inhibits or destroys microorganisms such as bacteria or mold.
Polycarbonate
A strong, heat-resistant plastic used in high-stress vacuum components.
Vacuum Tools, Nozzles & Accessories
Brush Roll (Beater Bar)
A rotating cylinder with bristles that agitates carpet fibers to loosen embedded dirt.
Cog / Gear Style Belt
A toothed vacuum belt designed to prevent slipping and last longer than flat belts.
Paper Bag
A disposable vacuum bag made of porous paper that traps dust and debris.
Power Nozzle
An electrically driven carpet-cleaning head with a motorized brushroll.
Self-Propelled Vacuum
A vacuum with a motorized transmission that assists forward and reverse movement.
